Inside the Wallpaper
This work was inspired by a
short story by the late 19th - early 20th century feminist scholar
Charlotte
Perkins Gilman, a story described by Ann J. Lane as
the "only deeply self-examining writing she ever did."
"The Yellow Wall-Paper" is narrated
by a young mother whose physician-husband has decided to cure her
"slight
hysterical tendency" by separating her from her newborn, and locking
her
into an old nursery. The young woman's
diary becomes a riveting journey into madness.
As the lonely days unfold, the patterns on the crumbling
wallpaper of
the nursery take on a life of their own: hers.
